From introductory birding classes to hands-on conservation efforts, these events that take place at Moose Hill in Sharon, Stony Brook in Norfolk, Museum of American Bird Art Education Center in Canton, and Blue Hills Trailside Museum in Milton promise something for everyone and every age.
Weekly Early Morning Walks
Here’s your chance to see if the early bird really gets the worm. Start your Wednesday with a morning bird walk at Stony Brook in Norfolk. Combine gentle exercise along our boardwalk with opportunities to observe birds active in Stony Brook’s wetlands at the start of the day. Spot our common favorites like ducks, goldfinches, and bluebirds, or challenge yourself to find more camouflaged birds hiding deeper in the brush, leaf litter, and thick canopy.
Join a Themed Walk
Not a morning person? Take advantage of Stony Brook and Trailside Museum’s mid to late day themed bird walks after an indoor presentation focusing on topics such as habitats, a particular species, or specific bird features. With a variety of birding programs suited for adults or families with young children, all ages can connect with nature through the winter season.
Combine Art and Nature
Discover the beauty of birds and nature through engaging activities that bring art and wildlife together. Create stunning bird-inspired artwork at MABA Education Center’s printmaking programs. Or take a deeper dive with The Art and Ecology of Owls where you will come away with a deeper knowledge of these amazing birds and make some unique art before heading out on a guided hike of their habitat.
For a chance to spot owls and enjoy solitude in nature, hike MABA Education Center’s Pine Grove Trail, Brook Path, or Meadow Loop for a glimpse of a resident Great Horned or Barred owl.
Learn the Basics of Birding
For those new to the hobby, Birding 101 at Moose Hill in Sharon i ntroduces the art of birdwatching in a beginner-friendly way. Participants learn how to use binoculars, identify common local species, and recognize birds by their calls and markings. This program perfectly suits families and individuals eager to start their birding journey.
Participate in a Bird Count
Nature enthusiasts contribute to nationwide science research by joining Project Feederwatch. Volunteers survey bird populations at the feeders at Moose Hill, a critical activity that supports conservation efforts and helps scientists monitor migratory patterns and habitat health. No prior experience is necessary, and experts guide participants throughout the process.
Visit Blue Hills Trailside Museum
At the Trailside Museum in Milton, you can get up close with majestic raptors and owls. Marvel at the striking beauty of Snowy Owls, observe the impressive wingspan of a Bald Eagle, and watch the graceful movements of Turkey Vultures. You’ll also meet a variety of owls, from the tiniest screech owls to larger species like the Great Horned Owl.
