Trails at Drumlin Farm

Explore 4 miles of trails at Drumlin Farm Wildlife Sanctuary. Discover the far reaches of the Boyce Field Loop and visit our crops fields, or wander the Farmyard Loop and visit our animal exhibits. There is an easy hike to the top of the drumlin, one of the highest points in the greater Boston area, on which you can see Mount Wachusett on a clear day.

Trail Descriptions

Ice Pond Trail (All Person's)

Length: 350 feet
Details: Universally accessible, five-foot wide path with a smooth packed surface, moderate slope upward from the parking lot end towards the nature center.
Special features: Tactile exhibits of frogs, turtles, and birds; additional accessible materials available (audio tour, printed and Braille guides, tactile map).

Farmyard Loop Trail (All Person's)

Length: 1/2 mile roundtrip
DetailsUniversally accessible except for a rough side path at Bird Hill. Combination of wide paved walkway and hard-packed dirt road, path slopes downhill from the nature center with benches available for rest stops at the steepest sections.
Special features: The “main” loop of the farm where you will see all the sights—wildlife, farm animals, and garden; additional accessible materials available (audio tour, printed and Braille guides, tactile map).

Forest Discovery Trail

Length: 1/3 mile extension from Farmyard Loop Trail
Details: Uneven ground with some roots and rocks in the path and short uphill portion going counterclockwise around the loop. May be challenging for strollers and wheelchairs.
Special features: Nature play area where kids can pretend to be animals—hop like a rabbit, sit in a giant hawk’s nest, crawl through a woodchuck tunnel, and build a mouse house. Look for a map in the map box as you enter the trail behind New England Wildlife Exhibit.

Beeline Trail

Length: 1/4 mile, connects to Drumlin Loop Trail
Details: Uneven ground with roots and rocks in the path. Generally not suitable for most strollers or wheelchairs.
Special features: Fun, short "through the woods" path out to the crop fields. Along the way, you'll find a platform that offers a view of one of our many small ponds. It's a great spot to observe visiting birds and, if you’re lucky, turtles sunning themselves on a log at the water’s edge

Drumlin Loop Trail

Length: 1/2 mile
Details: Moderate with uneven ground and some uphill sections. Generally not suitable for most strollers or wheelchairs.
Special features: Scenic view at the top of the drumlin; good for birding.

Hayfield Loop

Length: Additional 3/4-mile extension from Drumlin Loop Trail
Details: Moderate with uneven ground. Generally not suitable for most strollers or wheelchairs.
Special features: Walk through the “wilder” parts of the sanctuary, with a chance to feel almost totally alone in nature; good for birding.

Boyce Field Loop

Length: 1/4 mile
Details: Rough flat dirt road. Suitable for most strollers and wheelchairs.
Special features: An easy stroll around the first crop field, where you can check out what’s growing and see the flowers and herbs in the perennial bed.

Crops Discovery Trail

Length: 3/4 mile, overlaps with Boyce Field Loop
Details: Rough flat dirt road. Suitable for most strollers and wheelchairs.
Special features: Series of interpretive signs to teach you about our sustainable growing practices and what’s out in the fields. Good for birding.

Bobolink Trail Loop

Length: Additional 1/3 mile extension from Boyce Field Loop.
Details: Moderate with some uneven ground. May be challenging for strollers and wheelchairs. Good for birding.
Special features: Short detour to the Overlook where you will get a great view of the crop fields; good spot for wildlife viewing (birds and small mammals).
