Groundhog Day at Drumlin Farm

Special Event: February 2, 2025

9:30 am-12:00 pm

While groundhogs can’t actually determine whether or not we will have an early spring, Groundhog Day is a fun tradition that offers us time to reflect on the changing season.

This year, we’ll gather outdoors to see our resident groundhog make her prognostication and hear comments from State Representative Alice Peisch and Mass Audubon staff members. Afterwards, enjoy winter activities like meeting and interacting with our wildlife ambassadors, exploring wilderness trails, and family-friendly groundhog crafts. We’ll also discuss how New England wildlife survives the winter and how the changing climate impacts their habitat.

The History of Groundhog Day at Drumlin Farm

Drumlin Farm’s very own groundhog, Ms. G, was declared the Official State Groundhog of Massachusetts by then-Governor Deval Patrick on July 31, 2014. He signed the proposed bill submitted by Wellesley’s Hunnewell Elementary School students, enacting it into law.

Each year, Ms. G takes the stage to make her prediction of spring, rivaling Punxsutawney Phil. This festive event has become a beloved day at Drumlin Farm since its beginning in 2008.
