Coastal Habitats Field Trip Series (3-5)

Field Trip Series: School-based introductory program followed by a field trip with a final wrap-up lesson at your school.

Intro School Program: (one-hour) Students learn about and compare the physical characteristics of live marine organisms, beach sand, rocks, minerals and live plants to prepare them for an on-the-coast field trip. Topics include Rocky Shore/Tide Pools*, Salt Marsh*, and Sandy Beach (topics can be combined). Field Trip (multi-hour) Students visit and investigate the seashore or estuary to learn first-hand about zonation, the effects of erosion and weathering, proper collecting and handling techniques and adaptations of live organisms. Follow-up School Program: (one-hour) Students conclude the series with a series of STEM activities and investigations in which they will demonstrate their understanding of why organisms are well suited to specific habitats.*Topic denotes special pricing for program.Allergy Note: This program features live crustaceans, mollusks, and fish.Locations: School & Field Trip Field (trips may take place at Joppa Flats Education Center, on Plum Island or in Ipswich MA)

In-School Sessions: Program cost depends on number of classrooms participating and the length of the program (no auditorium style programs). Maximum of 20-22 students per classroom and no more than 3 classrooms per day. Specialty program fees and mileage not included. Field Trip Session: Program cost depends on number of students and length of program. Mass Audubon charges a flat fee per group of 15 students ("sub-group").
