Birds, Banding and Migration Field Trip Series (6-8)

Field Trip Series: School-based introductory program followed by a field trip with another wrap-up lesson at your school

Intro School Program (one-hour) Students learn about the importance of bird banding research with a multimedia virtual tour of our bird banding station and they will learn about songbird migration elements and use of a field guide and migration maps with an interactive group challenge.

Field Trip (multi-hour) Visit the bird banding station to observe how migratory birds are captured, identified, studied, and released. Focus on native plants that provide nourishment, nesting material, and shelter for birds on a guided bird walk and use binoculars in the field to find and identify birds by sight and sound.

Follow-up School Program (one-hour) In this one-hour lab session, students will practice bird banding skills like species identification, taking measurements, and using banding tools with life-size bird models in the classroom and discuss how climate change affects birds over time.
