Field School: Islands of Cape Cod by Land and Sea
Description
Separated from the mainland and surrounded by water, islands are alluring because of their remote and unique nature. This field school will feature some of the unique islands of the Cape. From Great Island in Wellfleet to the tiny isles of Pleasant Bay, we will uncover the unique geologic history of these places.
These islands are also home to a wide array of wildlife. Along the way, we will search for diamondback terrapins, horseshoe crabs, and a variety of bird species, including nesting shorebirds. This active field school will feature both hiking and kayaking explorations.
Important Reminders: Previous (recent) paddling experience and good swimming ability are required. This course does not provide paddling instruction for beginners. Participants must have basic paddling skills. Open water bodies in which you'll be experiencing both wind and tide is not where you want to learn how to steer a boat!
Participants may choose among available single kayaks. All equipment is provided; all participants must wear life jackets.
*Please note: the hours listed on the schedule may vary from the sample schedule in the field school brochure and are subject to change based on tides, staff, optimal wildlife sightings, and other variables. A detailed schedule and list of things to bring will be prepared and sent to registrants at approximately 3-4 weeks in advance.
This course is one of several Cape Cod Field Schools offered. To learn more, visit www.massaudubon.org/capecodfieldschools.
