Hawk Migration Watch

Description

Mid-September is the peak of Broad-winged Hawk migration, and a great opportunity to experiences dozens or more of Broad-winged Hawks as they make their way to South America. Whether you're new to birds or have been birdwatching for years, hawk-watching is a fun, leisurely activity and a great way to enjoy Greylock Glen from the comfort of your own lawn chair. Our views of hawks are typically distant, but the sheer number of hawks drifting over the picturesque ridgeline is an incredible phenomenon to see, even from a distance.

This program begins with a short indoor presentation from a Mass Audubon naturalist. Afterwards, take a short walk and set up your lawn chair to watch for migrating hawks and stay for as long as you would like. Spotting scopes and binoculars will be available for registrants to borrow.

Instructions

Meet in the Education Wing at the Greylock Glen Outdoor Center. After you enter the Center through the main entrance, turn right. Follow the hall all the way to the end to see the door to the classroom area. For more information on the Outdoor Center, visit greylockglenresort.com. Doors will open 15 minutes before your program's start time to welcome any early arrivals.

Bring a lawn chair or folding camping chair. Dress for the weather; ideal hawk watching weather is often sunny and warm. Bring binoculars and a spotting scope if you have them. Extra binoculars and spotting scopes will be available to borrow. You're also welcome to bring your own lunch picnic to enjoy.

Directions to the Greylock Glen Outdoor Center:

1. As you travel on Fred Mason Road in Adams, turn onto Gould Road near Jaeschke Orchards.

2. Follow Gould Road up the hill. Turn left to stay on Gould Road. Do not continue straight onto Thiel Road, or you'll end up on an unpaved road leading to a water tower.

3. Follow Gould Road a short distance until it starts to curve to the right. Turn right into a driveway leading into the Greylock Glen parking lot, marked by a Greylock Glen banner sign. You will end up in a large, paved parking lot with the Outdoor Center visible.

This program is mainly outdoors and involves bringing your supplies on a 5-10 minute trip down the trail to the Glen Meadow Loop's hawk watch location. The remainder of the program is stationary. The trail is gravel-paved and level or gently sloping, and the hawk watch spot is located in a grassy field that could have uneven ground. Your guide will be able to assist with transporting several participant's lawn chairs.
