Birding Fall Migration for Beginners

Description

Learn tips to find and identify birds on their journey south during this casual, beginner-friendly walk. This program takes place in locations that contain a mix of forests, fields and wetlands that make them ideal for spotting migrant species, especially colorful wood-warblers, orioles, and thrushes.

Our walk will focus on the basics of bird-finding and identification as well as observing the behavior of the birds we can see. Bring your own binoculars or borrow a loaner pair from us.

Pre-registration is recommended. If the program is not full, a limited number of walk-ins can be accommodated by cash or check in exact change. Credit card payments are only for pre-registrations.

Instructions

Meet in the Education Wing at the Greylock Glen Outdoor Center. After you enter the Center through the main entrance, turn right. Follow the hall all the way to the end to see the door to the classroom area. For more information on the Outdoor Center, visit greylockglenresort.com. Doors will open 15 minutes before your program's start time to welcome anyone who arrives early.

Trail distance covered during the bird walk could vary significantly depending on how many birds we see. This program will cover up to 1.7 miles on a wide, gravel-paved trail. The trail surface is largely flat with a few gentle inclines. The trail surface could be wet or muddy depending on recent weather.

Directions to the Greylock Glen Outdoor Center:

1. As you travel on Fred Mason Road in Adams, turn onto Gould Road near Jaeschke Orchards.

2. Follow Gould Road up the hill. Turn left to stay on Gould Road. Do not continue straight onto Thiel Road, or you'll end up on an unpaved road leading to a water tower.

3. Follow Gould Road a short distance until it starts to curve to the right. Turn right into a driveway leading into the Greylock Glen parking lot, marked by a Greylock Glen banner sign. You will end up in a large, paved parking lot with the Outdoor Center visible.
