Spring Lecture Series: The Unique Courtship of the American Woodcock

Description

When the sun sets in early spring, woodcock love is in the air. Wet meadows and fields are transformed into a "runway" for the beautiful aerial courtship displays of this intriguing bird. At this indoor presentation, learn about the natural history of the American Woodcock, including where and why they dance. We will also recommend a few possible places (or even upcoming programs you can sign up for) to search for this local spectacle.

Although this program is primarily indoors, it could include an optional outdoor exploration at the end depending on where we're offering this program. See "Instructions and Directions" below for more information about whether an optional outdoor component is included as part of this program.

Instructions

Meet in the education wing at the Greylock Glen Outdoor Center. Because the main building will be closed, a sign will point you toward the correct side door to enter. For more information on the site, visit greylockglenresort.com.

This program includes an indoor presentation from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. followed by a 30-minute outdoor exploration to look for woodcocks on the trails nearby. We will cover less than 0.5 miles of distance. Dress for the weather of the evening. The trail surface -- which is typically wide and gravel-paved -- may be wet, muddy, icy or snowy depending on the weather.
