Birds of Summer: Boreal Breeding Specialties

Description

The Boreal Forest, commonly known as 'the great North Woods,' comprises one and a half billion acres of spruce, fir and wetlands, cutting a great swath across the northern US and Canada. Nearly half of all North American bird species rely on the Boreal Forest for nesting habitat and migratory stopover. Dubbed ‘;North America's bird nursery,’ each fall literally billions of birds leave their natal forest for their southern wintering grounds. We’ll explore what makes this habitat so special, as well as highlight the songbirds, waterfowl, and raptors that rely on it for nesting. We’ll pay special attention to sought after boreal specialists, such as Boreal Chickadee, Canada Jay, Spruce Grouse and Black-backed Woodpecker. If you missed some of the sought after warbler migrants on their way through Massachusetts, a July trip to the Boreal Forest will should fix that!
