Description
Immerse yourself in the Adirondacks wilderness of New York State, enjoying breathtaking landscapes while seeking out regional specialty birds, including 18+ species of breeding wood-warblers. As a highlight we will take the Whiteface Veterans' Memorial Highway to the top of Whiteface Mountain, the fifth highest peak in New York. This is the only highway other than the Mt. Washington Toll Road that climbs into the limited breeding range of Bicknell’s Thrush.
Much of the Adirondack region is boreal forest with numerous scattered lowland bogs, which is the breeding habitat of Spruce Grouse, Boreal Chickadee, Canada Jay, Black-backed Woodpecker, Olive-sided and Yellow-bellied Flycatchers, Philadelphia Vireo, and Lincoln’s Sparrow. Just west of the Adirondacks are agricultural areas and extensive grasslands in the St. Lawrence Valley which are home to Grasshopper and Clay-colored sparrows, Golden-winged Warbler, Sedge Wren and possibly Henslow’s Sparrow.
