Owls of Massachusetts

Description

We often call owls the gateway to birds, as well as the nocturnal world. In this 4-week online program, learn about 7 owls that live in the Commonwealth part time or year-round. Discover their significance in local habitats, conservation efforts to protect them, and the best times, locations, and methods for identifying owls by sight and sound. Plus, enjoy a virtual live meeting with some of Mass Audubon's owl wildlife ambassadors.

Each session’s learning will build on concepts discussed in prior ones, so registration for individual weeks is not available for this program. Registration includes these four online sessions:

January 15: Introduction to Owls - Explore the connection between owl myths and science, their unique adaptations, and their ability to thrive in diverse climates.

January 29: Owls of the Woodlands – Delve into three of New England's quintessential owls of the forest: Great-horned, Barred, and Eastern Screech.

February 12: Owls of the Coast – Focus on owls that specialize in open landscape hunting and come alive during the twilight hours in Massachusetts salt marshes in winter: Snowy, Short-eared, and Long-eared.

February 26: Saw-whet Owl Conservation and Research – Kathy Seymour, a Mass Audubon birding trip leader and owl bander will share her observations from 15 years of banding saw-whet owls in Eastern Massachusetts.
