Winter Birds of Gulf Coast Texas

Description

The lower Rio Grande valley and the southern Texas Gulf Coast are located at the confluence of two major migratory flyways and four climatic zones making the area one of the most important regions for birds in North America. The overlap of distinct habitats and the southern latitude make the Rio Grande Valley the most biologically diverse four-county area in the United States. Over the course of our trip, we will visit some of the best winter birding locations in the country.

As a special experience, we'll take a boat trip with Rockport Birding Adventures to see federally endangered Whooping Cranes. Other prime 'target birds' for the trip include many Texas specialties such as Least Grebe, Ringed & Green Kingfishers, White-tailed Hawk, Plain Chachalaca, Crested Caracara, White-tipped Dove, Red-billed Pigeon, Long-billed & Curve-billed Thrashers, Aplomado Falcons, Altamira Orioles, and Green Jays.

Texas specialties, many permanent residents and wintering birds, and spectacular habitats and scenery make the Gulf Coast and the lower Rio Grande River Valley an incredible place to visit!
