Autumn Avians: Sudden Population Surges

Description

Late fall is a special time to see birds. Our common feeder birds - Black-capped Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, American Goldfinches, and Dark-eyed Juncos – are always a joy to see. To add to the fun, some years we welcome irruptive birds: species that aren't common here but flock in from the north in search of food. Snowy Owls are one of the best-known irruptive birds, usually found on coastal dunes and marshes. Last year brought Pine Siskins to New England, along with a couple of Northern Hawk-Owls. In this online program, learn about the behavior and the forces behind irruptions, which birds are surging, and get tips on spotting these exciting species.
