Banding Station Visit for Birders

Description

Visit Joppa Flats' Bird Banding Station on Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and observe the bird banding process. Mass Audubon scientists capture, evaluate, and release migrant songbirds while you learn about migration and habitat use. Don't miss this rare opportunity -- the station operates only during the height of migration in spring (April and May) and fall (September and October) and is very weather dependent.

Instructions

Meet at Joppa Flats Education Center, 1 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport, MA.

A volunteer guide will lead a caravan of vehicles, carpooling as necessary to the banding station. The walk from the parking area to the banding station is about 100 yards on a flat dirt road. The program will be stationary at that point, and you will remain at the banding shed, with no additional walking required. Please dress for tick safety and consider bringing bug spray, as we will be in a wooded area. Bathrooms are available close by at the Sub-headquarters parking lot.

Wear clothing and footwear appropriate for the weather and potentially muddy trails. Bring a field guide and binoculars.
