Description
Late April is a wonderful time to walk around the impoundment at Great Swamp Wildlife Management Area in West Kingston, RI to look for birds. This 4-mile walk on even ground through swamps, fields, and mixed forests hosts shorebirds, ibis, herons, rails, swallows, ducks, nesting osprey, and more. In the fields and forests around the pond we will look for warblers including Palm, Yellow, Pine, Yellow-rumped, Northern Waterthrush, Ovenbird, Black and White. Other possible songbirds include Great Crested Flycatcher, gnatcatchers, vireos, Indigo Bunting, tanagers, orioles, Eastern Bluebird, thrushes, Eastern Kingbird, and sparrows. Raptors such as American Kestrel, Broad-winged Hawk, and accipiters are also likely. The birds will be singing, which also creates a wonderful opportunity to work on bird song identification.
