Birding the Big Three

Description

Fall brings northern migrants traveling through Massachusetts and there are three great habitats close by Drumlin Farm that provide food and cover for many of these birds. We will explore the fields, marshes, and woody edges of Bolton Flats Wildlife Management Area in Lancaster to look for rails, bitterns, flycatchers, sparrows, warblers, vireos, and any surprise species. We will walk the trails at Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge in Harvard through forest and swamp looking for Wood Ducks, Soras, Swamp Sparrows, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, and various warblers. Finally, we will stop at Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord to look for shorebirds, ducks, wrens, and fall migrants feeding along the edges of the marsh and trails. These three refuges provide a tremendous assortment of habitats and excellent birding opportunities for a wide variety of species.
