Cape Cod Bird Sightings — Tuesday, September 3, 2024

Cape Cod Weekly Wildlife Sightings is sponsored by the Bird Watchers General Store in Orleans and Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. The following sightings were reported between August 28 and September 3, 2024.

A Brown Booby was seen at Race Point in Provincetown on the 28th, and other reports from the Race this week included a Pacific Loon, 4 Red Knots, 2 Whimbrels, a Long-tailed Jaeger, 15 Parasitic Jaegers, 1500 Laughing Gulls, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 3000 Common Terns, 800 Roseate Terns, 10 Cory’s Shearwaters, 50 Great Shearwaters, 15 Sooty Shearwaters, and 250 Manx Shearwaters.

The continuing high diversity of wading birds at Pogorelc Sanctuary in Barnstable included 2 Little Blue Herons, 5 Yellow-crowned Night Herons, 1 Black-crowned Night Heron, 50 Great Egrets, and 10 Snowy Egrets.

Several reports from Chapin Beach in Dennis, including a Cape Cod Bird Club walk, turned up 2 American Oystercatchers, an American Golden-Plover, 450 Black-bellied Plovers, a Marbled Godwit, 2 Red-necked Phalaropes, 26 Red Knots, 550 Sanderlings, and 800 Laughing Gulls

Other sightings around the Cape included a Sabine’s Gull on Stellwagen Bank, a Black Vulture in Bourne, 81 American Oystercatchers and 16 Lesser Black-backed Gulls at Morris Island in Chatham, and single Philadelphia Vireos in Brewster and Wellfleet.
