Cape Cod Bird Sightings — Tuesday, July 23, 2024

Cape Cod Weekly Wildlife Sightings is sponsored by the Bird Watchers General Store in Orleans and Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. The following sightings were reported between July 17 and July 23, 2024.

Single Mississippi Kites were seen over Rt. 28 in Mashpee and Cotuit on the 16th and 17th.

Birds noted during shorebird surveys in various parts of Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge included an Iceland Gull, 2 Black Skimmers, 62 American Oystercatchers, a Whimbrel, 3100 Short-billed Dowitchers, 58 Red Knots, 2500 Semipalmated Sandpipers, and 30 Snowy Egrets.

Birds roosting at the tip of Sandy Neck in Barnstable included an American Golden-Plover, 276 Semipalmated Plovers, 32 Piping Plovers, 266 Semipalmated Sandpipers, and 60 Roseate Terns.

Birds at the Chatham end of Nauset Beach included a Long-tailed Duck, a Caspian Tern, 6 American Oystercatchers, 18 Piping Plovers, 385 Short-billed Dowitchers, 11 Red Knots, and 50 Roseate Terns.

Birds at Race Point in Provincetown included 2 Parasitic Jaeger, 2 Black Terns, 150 Roseate Terns, 120 Wilson’s Storm-Petrels, 18 Cory’s Shearwaters, 55 Great Shearwaters, 7 Sooty Shearwaters, and 12 Manx Shearwaters.

Other sightings around the Cape included 3 Blue Grosbeaks and a Black Vulture in Falmouth, a continuing Chuck-will’s-Widow at Nauset Light Beach in Eastham, and a Sora at High Head in North Truro.
