Cape Cod Bird Sightings — Tuesday, December 31, 2024

Cape Cod Weekly Wildlife Sightings is sponsored by the Bird Watchers General Store in Orleans and Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. The following sightings were reported between December 25 and December 31, 2024.

Massachusetts’s first record of a Ferruginous Hawk was found at Morris Island in Chatham on Sunday. This is only the 5th record of the species on the entire east coast.

An Ash-throated Flycatcher was found in Falmouth this week.

The Spotted Towhee and a lingering Prairie Warbler continued at the Provincetown Airport this week, and the Black-chinned Hummingbird and Western Tanager continue elsewhere in Provincetown.

A Pacific Loon and an Atlantic Puffin were at Race Point in Provincetown along with a Dovekie, 11 Common Murres, 19 Iceland Gulls, a Manx Shearwater, 10 Red-necked Grebes, 2 Common Ravens, and an Ipswich Savannah Sparow.

Other sightings around the Cape included a Vesper Sparrow in Falmouth, a Black-headed Gull in Osterville, 10 Long-billed Dowitchers and a Black-and-white Warbler in Centerville, and an American Woodcock in Hyannis Harbor.
