Saltmarsh Restoration Success at Great Neck

May 26, 2023

We are thrilled to share the latest progress from our saltmarsh restoration and migration project at Great Neck Wildlife Sanctuary in Wareham, as the efforts we initiated in 2022 have yielded exceptional results.

One significant aspect of the project involved implementing a new control method to address a dense and invasive phragmites infestation at the saltmarsh/upland boundary. Our goal was to enhance success rates while minimizing the time and use of chemicals required for control. I am delighted to announce that our phragmites control project has been a resounding success!

Over the course of just one year, we estimate that we have achieved control rates exceeding 99.99% across the entire >3-acre area that was once overrun by phragmites. The transformation is truly remarkable, as the once dominating >8-foot-tall phragmites have been replaced by a vibrant green haze of saltmarsh grass. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the South East’s dedicated property team.

Our restoration efforts continue to make a significant impact, transforming the saltmarsh into a thriving ecosystem. We are immensely grateful for the support of our team and our partners who have played a vital role in this project's success.
