How Can I Help?

There are three ways to help us learn about the current status of Massachusetts Whip-poor-wills:

  1. Use our new map tool to pinpoint where you have heard a Whip-poor-will. Fill in the details of your encounter, add some comments about the habitat or past experiences if you like, then click submit and your record will migrate to our database.

  2. Download data cards (PDF 73 KB), fill them out, and send them to the address below.

  3. Do a listening route by car (PDF 122 KB). Follow this link to find detailed instructions and data forms for following a more detailed methodology. We have established a number of "listening routes" statewide. The basic methodology is to drive these routes under certain prescribed conditions, stopping at regular intervals listening for three minutes and recording any Whip-poor-wills you hear. You may also select your own listening route, according to specific guidelines. The survey form for the listening routes is more complex than the data cards described above and requires you to fill in information about habitat, noise conditions and other factors.
