Mummichog

The most common fish in the marsh, this small minnow can grow
to be three to four inches in length. It is found in tidal creeks
and ponds. It feeds on diatoms, tiny mollusks, crustaceans, and
other Mummichogs.
The Mummichog is useful because it controls salt marsh mosquitoes
which are annoying to humans. Sometimes Mummichogs are swept into
a salt pond where there are mosquito larvae. Larvae are a real
treat for the Mummichog.
During the breeding season, the male's stomach will change to
a bright yellow, and his back to a dark blue, in order to attract
females. Once fertilized, Mummichog eggs will drop to the bottom
of the pond and hatch within two weeks.
