Paddlers Guide to New England Rivers

Welcome to Mass Audubon's online Paddlers Guide to New England Rivers. New England is fortunate to have a river system that supports a rich and diverse community of flora and fauna. This interactive website is intended to give the visitor a sample of what can be encountered on a typical paddle along a river or stream in this region. You can also take a closer look at the small things that are found just below the surface and explore the interesting habitat of the estuary, where river meets ocean.

Use the menu at the left to start your visit to these interesting and beautiful river habitats and to learn how you can help protect them. Point to a plant or animal in the illustration to learn its name and interesting facts about the species.

Species named in red are considered invasive. If introduced or left unchecked, they can limit the diversity of native species found in these habitats.
