School Programs PK – 8th
Stony Brook’s educational programming furnishes students with a greater understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Stony Brook’s staff are well versed in ecological and educational concepts and strive to provide only the highest quality programs which stress hands-on, experiential learning. All programs are designed to support guidelines of the Massachusetts State Curriculum Frameworks as well as the Benchmarks for Environmental Literacy. On site programs take advantage of the unique features of our varied landscape to excite and motivate students. Students are encouraged to make discoveries and ask questions as they explore the sanctuary through hands-on investigations and activities.

In the Schoolyard:
Stony Brook’s education staff can help schools make the best use of the natural areas surrounding their schools. A Stony Brook naturalist will work with teachers and parents to develop programs in your schoolyard or on your school nature trail. Teacher training workshops and on site programs for children can be developed to meet your school curriculum.
Alternatively, many of our field trip topics can be adapted for you schoolyard. Two Audubon Teachers are provided for a one-hour class that utilizes the landscape around your school as a springboard for investigation. Outdoor components may be combined with classroom visits to enhance your students’ experience.
Homeschoolers

Preschool Outreach
Bring nature to your preschool classroom! Invite a Stony Brook teacher naturalist to visit your class to talk about a variety of topics. Seasonal topics are taught September through June, focusing on what is happening outside in the children's backyards. We incorporate creative dramatics, songs and fingerplays, games, manipulatives, puppets, mounted animals (stuffed REAL animals!), and an occasional live animal into the programs to engage and teach the children. For program descriptions, download the Preschool Outreach Brochure(PDF 203KB).
