School & Group Programs

Explore Your Natural World with Mass Audubon's South Shore Sanctuaries!

Programs for Preschool through Kindergarten
Our early childhood programs incorporate naturalist-directed hands-on and observational activities with interactive games, stories, and songs. These programs support the early childhood program standards. A variety of guideline methods and concepts are implemented to engage young children in learning through inquiry and exploration. Our goal is to incorporate learning experiences in science and technology with language arts, visual arts, reading, and literature, mathematics, history, and social science to help build a foundation for a child’s understanding and skills in all content areas.

Neighborhood Birds
Fee is $12 per child. Program length is one hour.
Become acquainted with the native songbirds that might be looking for a home in your own backyard. Learn how to identify birds by their appearance and song and build a nesting box. All supplies are included. Late winter or early spring are the best seasons for this program. Neighborhood Birds can. take place either at your location or at the North River Wildlife Sanctuary, with a short trail walk included. An Interpretive Hayride would be a meaningful extension to this program.

Interpretive Hayrides
Fee is $100. Program is one hour. Two tractor-drawn wagons are available, each accommodating up to 35 passengers.
This program will provide a variety of learning experiences relating to living things and their environment. During the hayride, and on a brief trail hike, observational and sensory activities will be conducted. Students will learn about grassland and wetland habitats and the animals and plants that can be found during the spring and fall at the Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary. This program could serve as an introduction to or a follow-up to these subjects: wildlife habitat, life cycles, food chains, animal adaptations, and bird study. Hayrides are conducted late April through early November.

Program Options
A classroom presentation combined with observational activities and outdoor exploration. These can be conducted on one of our three sanctuaries, a local beach, or conservation land.

At Your School
Fee is $75 for the initial program, $60 for each additional program on the same day. Program length is 50 minutes. Topics include: Animals in Winter, Aquatic Life, At Home in a Shell, Beaks, Feet, and Feathers, Butterflies and Moths, Down in the Dirt, Lots of Legs, and Worming Around.

Field Trips
Fee is $5 per person (1 free adult for every 5 students). Program length is one hour. Seasonal trail explorations may incorporate a guided nature walk with a scavenger hunt, a game, a simple craft, or a story. Topics include, Beachcombing Detectives, Birds in Every Season, Habitat Hop, Insect Search, Nature Detectives, and Poking Around a Pond.

Naturalist in Residence
Combine a series of classroom presentations, outdoor explorations, and/or teacher training to integrate environmental awareness and literacy into your curriculum. A naturalist can come to your school to conduct programs in each season. You determine the grade levels and the themes to help meet your framework goals. Learn how to best use the open space adjacent to your school. We can also assist with the design and construction of a nature trail or observation platform.

Professional Development Opportunities
Our workshops focus on environmental education with a special emphasis on South Shore habitats and history. These programs will provide you with hands-on classroom and outdoor activities. We are a DOE approved PDP provider. Contact us to request a list of offerings.
