Elementary school students learning about the eastern towhee at the Joppa Flats Bird Banding Station on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. The program focus will be on migration (adaptations, strategies, and geography) and on scientific research. Students will assist in the identification process, learn the external anatomy of birds, observe the scientific methods utilized for gathering data, and participate in data collection and recording. Students will observe the physical adaptations by which these amazing animals exploit their environment and will learn about the mechanisms, strategies, and geography of migration. Please call for dates of availability. The station is open in April, May, September, and October. 2-3 hours. Get scheduling information.

Exploring Plum Island, A Natural Classroom
Plum Island is a barrier island at the mouth of the Merrimack River and is made up of several habitats including beaches, dunes, salt marshes, freshwater impoundments, salt pannes, deciduous and coniferous forests, and tidepools. During this two to three-hour experience, we will explore the island to discover the natural forces that have contributed to the creation of this wonderful outdoor classroom. Students will investigate the barrier island system and observe the interrelationships among the many plant and animal communities present. Working with checklists, maps, and other interpretive materials provided by Joppa Flats, students will develop observation skills and record key information for discussion and analysis in the field and back in the classroom. 2-3 hours. Get scheduling information.

Year-round, the Newburyport/Plum Island area is an excellent place to study birds. Large numbers of birds are attracted to the varied habitats of the Plum Island estuary throughout the year. During this two to three-hour field trip, students will learn and apply aids to field identification including physical characteristics, behavior, coloration, habitat preference, and voice. We will explore the physical and behavioral adaptations that help each species find food, avoid predation, and survive the rigors of our New England climate. We will also discuss migration strategies, food sources, and other factors that will give your students an understanding of these marvelous animals and their place in the environment. Students will receive checklists and other interpretive materials. 2-3 hours. Get scheduling information.

Connections: Human and Natural History
The natural history of our area has played a key role in the settlement and development of our coastal communities, as well as the ways in which early inhabitants lived and where they chose to build their homes. Working with the Society of the Historic New England, Joppa Flats will develop joint programs that explore the connection between our natural and human histories. Students can visit the Little Farm and its 17th century manor house or the Coffin House, c.1654, which chronicles the evolution of domestic life in this region. During a field trip to the “outdoor classrooms” of the Joppa Flats Education Center, students can participate in hands-on learning experiences in a variety of habitats that explore our region’s natural history heritage.
