Amur Cork-Tree Mapping

go back

Goal

Project goal:

Document the presence and spread of Amur cork-tree (Phellodendron amurense) to assist in the evaluation of the invasiveness of this species.

Approach

Project Approach:

Survey of sanctuaries and surrounding properties to document the presence of Amur cork-tree. Record and map cork-tree locations using GPS and record data on tree size.

Results

Project Results:

Amur cork-tree was documented to have spread over long distances from planting locations at all sites. Documentation was submitted to the Massachusetts Invasive Plant Advisory Group (MIPAG) to assist with the evaluation of this species for invasiveness in Massachusetts. Amur cork-tree was subsequently determined to be a likely invasive species in Massachusetts and was banned for importation and sale by the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources.
