Tall Mannagrass Control

go back

Goal

Project goal:

Eradicate tall mannagrass before it can spread to other wetlands. Tall mannagrass is a troublesome invasive plant in several areas of the world. To date, the only known colony of tall mannagrass in Massachusetts occurs at Mass Audubon’s Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary.

Approach

Project Approach:

Mechanical and chemical control measures have been used, beginning in the mid-1990’s. Foliar treatments with the herbicide Rodeo are currently being used.

Results

Project Results:

Foliar herbicide treatments have been highly effective, but complete eradication has not been achieved and ongoing treatment has been found to be necessary to control resurgence. The project has so far prevented the spread of tall mannagrass beyond the area of the initial infestation.

Locations

Project Locations:

Ipswich Rivercontrol tall mannagrass on 5 acres of wetlands at Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary.
